Our story began in early 1990 when we purchased ‘Avenue Plains’, the first of our properties in the Avenue Range district, in South Australia’s Limestone Coast. Since then, the operation has grown to total 12,000-acres of prime South East cattle country.
We’re proud of having employed around 40 young locals here at Sheraco over the last 26 years — either as fulltime farmhands, some during their gap year, others during rock picking/paddock renovations or tree planting over school holidays. We’ve had some terrific employees pass through the Sheraco gates, with many going on to develop good careers both inside and outside of agriculture.
Now our own kids are grown, we’re fortunate to have both sons, Sam and Davey, on the farm, along with Grant who’s from a neighbouring property.
Our Beef
Sheraco Angus cattle lead a great life, roaming free-range across 12,000-acres in the beautiful Avenue Range, South East of South Australia. Our cattle are completely grass-fed and are supplemented seasonally with good liquid minerals sourced locally from the Limestone Coast. During the cool southern winters, our cattle are kept extra warm by adding pasture hay to their diet, which is grown here on the Sheraco properties. Our cattle love our rotational grazing system and it’s not unusual for them to tell us when they’d like to be shifted!
Sheraco is EU accredited and operates as a 100 percent self-replacing, closed herd. This means no outside cattle have been brought onto the properties over the last two decades. The Sheraco herd consists of 2,100 quality breeding cows with calves at foot and 600 replacement heifers. We run an AI programme most years to introduce new genetics and grow all our own commercial breeding bulls. We grow out between 800-1,000 weaner steers each year. We’ve never been involved in live export and only ever sell our cattle to reputable meat buyers and feedlots, keeping meat industry jobs right here in Australia.
